Social Insects: Rearing Temperature Affects Ant Thermoregulatory Behaviour

چکیده

Differing task thresholds among workers are crucial to the efficient allocation of work in self-organized insect colonies. New evidence suggests that the rearing temperature of ant pupae causes lifelong changes in an ant's response threshold to temperature.

Thermoregulation strategies in ants in comparison to other social insects, with a focus on red wood ants ( Formica rufa group)

Temperature influences every aspect of ant biology, especially metabolic rate, growth and development. Maintenance of high inner nest temperature increases the rate of sexual brood development and thereby increases the colony fitness. Insect societies can achieve better thermoregulation than solitary insects due to the former's ability to build large and elaborated nests and display complex beh...

Task-specific expression of the foraging gene in harvester ants.

In social insects, groups of workers perform various tasks such as brood care and foraging. Transitions in workers from one task to another are important in the organization and ecological success of colonies. Regulation of genetic pathways can lead to plasticity in social insect task behaviour. The colony organization of advanced eusocial insects evolved independently in ants, bees, and wasps ...

The influence of social structure on brood survival and development in a socially polymorphic ant: insights from a cross-fostering experiment.

Animal societies vary in the number of breeders per group, which affects many socially and ecologically relevant traits. In several social insect species, including our study species Formica selysi, the presence of either one or multiple reproducing females per colony is generally associated with differences in a suite of traits such as the body size of individuals. However, the proximate mecha...

Insect herbivores can choose microclimates to achieve nutritional homeostasis.

The interaction between temperature and diet quality can affect the life history of ectotherms. The rate and ratio at which protein and carbohydrate are obtained from food are important aspects of diet quality, and insects have a well-developed capacity to adjust their feeding behaviour and post-ingestive physiology to regulate intake and allocation of these nutrients. If the supply of protein ...
